Is Tofu, tempeh, soy products safe in pregnancy?

Generally safe

Yes — soy foods are safe in pregnancy.

What the evidence says

Tofu, tempeh, soya milk, and edamame are all safe in pregnancy and are valuable protein sources, particularly for vegetarian and vegan diets. Cook tofu and tempeh thoroughly. Soy formula or mega-doses of soy isolates are a different matter and not advised without dietitian input.

Why this matters

Whole soy foods in normal dietary amounts are safe. Concerns about phytoestrogens are not supported by the evidence at usual intake levels.
