Is Oysters (raw) safe in pregnancy?

Best avoided

No — raw shellfish is not recommended in pregnancy.

What the evidence says

Raw oysters and other raw shellfish should be avoided during pregnancy. Cooked oysters are fine if thoroughly heated through.

Why this matters

Raw shellfish can carry harmful bacteria and viruses (Vibrio, norovirus) that cause severe food poisoning. Pregnancy increases the risk of complications from food-borne illness.
