Is Sushi safe in pregnancy?

Safe with limits

Most UK-bought sushi is fine; raw fish at home is not.

What the evidence says

Sushi bought from reputable UK shops and supermarkets is generally safe because the fish has been frozen to kill parasites before use — this is a UK legal requirement. Sushi made at home from fresh (unfrozen) raw fish, or from small independent outlets where freezing cannot be confirmed, should be avoided. Cooked sushi (prawn, cooked salmon, vegetarian) is always fine.

Why this matters

Raw fish can carry parasites; freezing destroys them. UK shop-bought sushi is made with pre-frozen fish to meet food safety rules.
