Is Tuna safe in pregnancy?

Safe with limits

Up to 2 tuna steaks or 4 medium tins per week.

What the evidence says

Tuna is safe in pregnancy but should be limited because of its mercury content. The NHS advises no more than 2 fresh tuna steaks (about 140g cooked) per week, OR 4 medium-sized tins of tuna (140g drained) per week. This limit does not apply to other white fish.

Why this matters

Tuna contains more mercury than most other fish. High mercury exposure during pregnancy can affect the baby’s developing nervous system.
