Is Mackerel safe in pregnancy?
Generally safe
Yes — mackerel is safe and recommended as oily fish.
What the evidence says
Mackerel is safe and actively recommended in pregnancy as one of the oily fish to include 1–2 times per week. Both fresh and tinned mackerel are fine. Smoked mackerel falls under the same updated NHS guidance as smoked salmon — generally considered safe from reputable UK suppliers.
Why this matters
Mackerel is rich in omega-3 fatty acids (DHA/EPA) which support fetal brain and eye development. Mercury levels are low.
