Is Green tea safe in pregnancy?

Small amounts fine; concentrated forms and high intake not advised.

What the evidence says

Green tea in normal amounts (1–2 cups per day) is generally considered safe in pregnancy, contributing to the 200 mg daily caffeine limit. Matcha and concentrated green tea extracts are more potent and should be limited or avoided. High intake has been associated with reduced folate absorption.

Why this matters

Green tea contains caffeine and EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which at high intakes may interfere with folate. Normal cups are fine; supplements are not.
