Is Coffee safe in pregnancy?
Safe with limits
Up to 200 mg of caffeine per day — roughly 2 mugs of instant coffee.
What the evidence says
Coffee is safe in moderation during pregnancy. The NHS advises keeping total daily caffeine under 200 mg. Approximate caffeine content: one mug of instant coffee ~100 mg, one mug of filter coffee ~140 mg, one espresso shot ~75 mg, one mug of tea ~75 mg, can of cola ~40 mg, 50g dark chocolate ~25 mg.
Why this matters
High caffeine intake during pregnancy has been associated with low birth weight and an increased risk of miscarriage. Moderate amounts have not shown these associations.
