Is Fish oil / Omega-3 supplements safe in pregnancy?
Safe with limits
Omega-3 (DHA/EPA) supplements are safe; cod liver oil is not.
What the evidence says
Omega-3 supplements labelled as "DHA" or "EPA" fish oil are safe and often helpful in pregnancy, especially if you do not eat oily fish. DO NOT take cod liver oil or any fish liver oil — these contain high levels of vitamin A (retinol) which can harm the baby. Look for supplements specifically labelled "pregnancy-safe" or made from algae.
Why this matters
Omega-3 supports fetal brain and eye development. However, liver-based fish oils contain teratogenic levels of vitamin A.
