Is Vitamin D safe in pregnancy?

Generally safe

Yes — 10 micrograms (400 IU) daily throughout pregnancy.

What the evidence says

Vitamin D is actively recommended in pregnancy. The NHS advises 10 micrograms (400 IU) daily, year-round, for all pregnant and breastfeeding women. Many pregnancy multivitamins include this amount.

Why this matters

Vitamin D supports the baby’s bone and tooth development. Most UK adults are insufficient in vitamin D for part of the year.
