Is Hard cheese (Cheddar, Parmesan, Manchego) safe in pregnancy?
Generally safe
Yes — all hard cheeses are safe in pregnancy.
What the evidence says
Hard cheeses like Cheddar, Parmesan, Gouda, Manchego, Edam, and similar are all safe to eat in pregnancy, even if made from unpasteurised milk. The low moisture content prevents Listeria growth.
Why this matters
Hard cheeses have too little moisture for Listeria bacteria to multiply meaningfully, regardless of whether the milk was pasteurised.
